Symbol of Change in Afghanistan

In Afghanistan, a new change is risen from the hundreds of years, that men have controlled the totallity of the country. It had always been looked or perceived, by this society, that women had nothing to do with the country's government, until recent.

A woman by the name of Zahera Sharif, now holds one of the top highest position ever received by a woman. She is currently the fourth member of the Afghanistan parliament.

Eventhough Sharif still encounters, those akward moments when she is seated or being closed to the eldered men who have served in the parliamentary, she yet still holds herself together, and does the most normal thing to do-tries to work with these men for the benefits of the country.

Domestic Violence

According to a series of interviews done in a survey to 25,000 women around the world, it has been found that it is more common in Ethiopia rather than in Yokohama, Japan for women to be beat up by their spouses or partners that live- in with them.

Reported in the month of October, in the New York Times, it was specified that in 10 countries, at 15 locations, these interviews were held.

In six other countries, 50 percent of women, described that they had suffered between a moderate to a severe attack at some point in the relationship.

Proposition 85

In the upcoming California elections on Nov. 7, one very important propostion will be subject to many disputes-Proposition 85-.

Proposition 85 will be of great debate due to the fact that it deals with the always controversial issue of abortion. Proposition 85 which is also known as the "Parental Notification Initiative", deals with should the parents of under age teenagers be notify 48 hours prior to having this type of procedure done to them?

This initiative will basically give the doctor who will be performing the procedure to the teenager the responsability of informing the teeager's parent, of what the teenager will be going through in the following 48 hours. This notification will give the parents the opportunity of either stopping their daughters of going through the procedure or not.

Pro-choice advocates of this intiative say that this initiave will be of delay, and it some cases can put the girl's life in danger.

Pro-life advocates arguy the contrary, they advocate that this type of initiative will in fact put the young girl's life in a much safer situation. Having done an abortion is a serious health issue decision to go by.

Women's Resource Center

Interviewee: Director of Women's Resource Center at CSULB

1.) What is Women's Resource Center?

R- The Women's Resource Center is primarily based on three elements-1. Service 2. Education and 3. Advocacy; within service, WRC helps students with peer-counseling, it also helps if the students needs sometype of materials (i.e.-books, periodicals, related to women issues). Education will more for group discussions that we have (i.e.- sexual harassment, eating disorders, sexual assault, which rape could be included as well, feminism, etc.). Last but not least Advocacy falls within the help students might need. In some cases students might come here and would talk to about their problems, and we will try to help them or guide them in the right direction for the proper help. If there's one thing that we like to do here, is to be able to get students connected with the proper resources that we can offer, I always like to try and solve the problem, (if possible) within the center, and not go past me.

2.) Are these services only offer to students, or is also open for the public?

R- Mainly this program is only for college students, more for the women, but like I said, men are also welcome to come. I always get people from the community who call me and ask for advice or for help, and I always try to help them the most that I can.

3.) How long has the Women's Resource Center been open?

R- This center was open in 1973.

4.) How did this center come about?

R- This center practically started with a few students and a table. This was at the student union, and a couple of girls were outsidewith this little table, and a poster that read "Women Information". This was primarily if students needed to ask quetions regarding us women, and because of this, later on students actually requested for a such center to be open and installed permantly on campus.

5.) Do students need an appointment to talk to any of you here, in the resource center?

R- No, we pretty much accept walk-ins.

6.) Are there any meetings being held here in the center?

R- Yes, we do have group discussions here, but if its going to be a big event that deals with the WRC then we normaly tend to use the Beach Auditorium, due to the small room that this center has.

7.) What kind of discussion groups does this center offer?

R- We have a Latinas Unidas, which is program pretty much formed by latinas who would want to talk about issues that concern latina women. We also have Sisterfriends and Lesbian chat- sisterfriends is primarily within the African-American women, and Lesbian chat, is used for women who would like to talk about the different issues they might have.

8.) Is this resource center only for women?

R- No, this center can be also for men. What we teach when they come here, if looking for a place to volunteer, is mainly that we teach them how to organize a program, for example if they need to do a project that will require the organization of a possible event, then we would guide them, and teach them how to do it.

It has finally occur, the first woman to be appointed bishop, the new leader for the United States Episcopal Church.

Katherine Jefferts Schori a 52-year-old women, who before involved within the church, she was an oceanographer for the National Marine Fisheries Services in Seattle.

Jefferts Schori has accumulated a number of degrees throughout her life. For example, she has a bacherlor's degree in Biology, two master's in Oceanography and divinity, and two doctoral degrees in oceanography and divinity.

The act of a woman to now being named the first female bishop to have ever been leader of the U.S. Episcopal church has made history; this type of action can only show one thing- women are now being held and seen in a level equally to men.

Early on June of the present year, it was finally done by a pharmaceutical called Merck, the first vaccine against breast cancer.

This vaccine is also good agains HPV, which is a sexual transmitted disease, in which is effective in preventing this disease in a 90 percent of the cases.

Without a doubt, this new discovered vaccine, will most likely change the lives of thousands of women, due to the fact that now women, will be in a way more safe from getting HPV.

The United States have started to get nervous, ever since North Korea launched their first nuclear bomb last week.

Now the United States are urging the U.N. to sanction North Korea for their unthinkable action they have committed.

Now there is another reason why the U.S. should start to get worried about, for one thing, now that North Korea have test out their first experiment with nuclear power, the U.S. is now worried that they might start selling nuclear material supplies- to neighboring countries.
